Paul and his pack; Briana and her pack; Steve and his pack

Arturo in my pack (getting pre-loaded is NOT his favorite)
On the move, with regular stops for the little guy to pick/eat blueberries along the way!
We chose a spot near a riverbed in Unit 14, not far from Wonder Lake, to make our camp: tents and surroundings; a late breakfast for us and a lovely mountain nap for Turo; view of Denali's foothills from the tent
Along with some other small mammals and birds, in Denali we saw two brown (grizzly) bears, a wolf, a fox, and a lot of moose, caribou and mountain sheep!
Cars aren't allowed into Denali Park. There's just one (dirt) road in, and the only way to travel it is on an official park bus, which basically means an old school bus. We chose to be dropped-off 5.5 hours into the park (one-way), so we were a little concerned that Arturo would be less than thrilled about the ride, but he did great in both directions. Here he is, sleeping on the bus ride out of the park.
Several people have asked us if we get worried about camping (or in this case backpacking) with a baby, particularly so far into Denali Park, where there are no services and the nearest hospital is 6 hours drive (in addition to possible hiking time back to the road and waiting time for a bus, which can be many hours). Sure, we worry a little, but we try to translate that concern into sound planning, including good equipment, smart route selection, etc. Oh, and for good measure, on this very remote trip, we were also happy to be traveling with Stanford's finest orthopedic surgeon, Briana! :-)
