We know quite a few babies around Arturo's age or a little older, and over the past few months I've seen pictures of several of them happily finger painting. So, when our neighbor gave us some finger paints a few weeks ago, we thought "what a great activity for Arturo's 1st birthday!" As you can see above, it didn't go as smoothly as we hoped. Turo was excited enough about the colorful paints at first, and he even managed to get a little on the paper (rather than just in his mouth), but his attention turned quickly to painting the contents of the kitchen cabinets and to unloading the refrigerator, etc. It just deteriorated from there, as he completely blew a gasket when redirected to the intended activity (see face-to-the-floor posture above).
Maybe it's a matter of better baby-proofing our kitchen or bathroom (the only completely washable spaces in our apartment). Even so, it's hard to imagine Arturo being fully satisfied with painting in our home right now, since drawers, doors and cupboards that don't open also make him fume, and reorganizing cabinet contents is difficult given our limited space.
I should note, Auntie Renee suggested pudding in place of paints to solve the problem of the little guy eating his weight in synthetic goo. Smart! I've already looked up some recipes for colorful puddings made with natural ingredients and look forward to employing these the instant we find a space in which Arturo can paint to his heart's content!
